Lauren Penkala '09

Lauren Penkala, DCDS Alumni of the Class of 2009, is the current Job Developer of the Match Grant Program at CCMRS. Lauren chooses to partner with one new non-profit every semester and complete one major act of community service for the chosen organization. As an AmeriCorps alumni and current student in the Non-Profit Administration Master's Program at JCU, Lauren feels the strong connection to service and building relationships. By bringing in the team, her rowers are also learn the value and importance in service and giving back to the greater Cleveland area.

The John Carroll University Rowing Team participated in its 1st Annual: Make a Difference Day. As a Jesuit University, both team members and coaches (Lauren is Head Coach) felt that it was time to give back to the Greater Cleveland community as a thank you for the opportunity to learn, grow and row in a beautiful city with beautiful people. In October of 2014, rowers showed their support to the community in two very different ways. Twice, team members participated in JCU's Labre outing to feed the homeless and extend beyond the actual day of service.

October 25, 2014, marking the very first Make a Difference Day, offered rowers a chance to learn about a very unique Nonprofit Organization in Cleveland, Cleveland Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services. Team members were taught about refugees and their status and reasons for resettlement in the Cleveland area. Upon finishing a short discussion, all rowers cleaned out an old house and made it new by working on the bathrooms, kitchen, floors, living spaces, appliances and landscaping. In the course of about four hours, team members had done everything from cleaning the refrigerator, to assembling furniture to fixing blinds over the windows. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the team, the home is now being used by CCMRS to offer programming through the Single Mother's Program. The home is called, "Mary's House," and is used to aid single mothers in becoming self-sufficient in America through classes and programming (such as learning to do the laundry, clean the house and cook).
