Nearly 4 years ago, a dear friend of mine introduced me to a small
non-profit doing extraordinary work in Detroit with LGBTQ youth experiencing
homelessness, Ruth
Ellis Center (REC). At the time, I had no idea how many young people
faced homelessness due to family rejection based on their sexual orientation,
gender identity, or gender expression, but the thought alone made me want to do
more. Three months later, I found myself joining their board of directors,
volunteering whatever time and resources I could, and learning everything
I could about what these young people were facing.
Great work, Elizabeth!
